New York man contracts dengue fever from local mosquito

For the first time ever, someone in New York State contracted dengue fever locally, health officials said. You get dengue virus from a mosquito bite. That means he got the virus from a local mosquito that probably had previously bitten an infected traveler.

Dengue can cause illness and death in tropical and subtropical countries in some conditions.

“The exact route of transmission in this case is unknown,” said Dr. James Tomarken, “However, we have determined that this individual acquired dengue virus locally, as he had not traveled outside of the local metropolitan area during the incubation period.” Recent other dengue infections had more liekly happened while those patients were travelling in other countries.

The dengue fever can be spread by two mosquitoes : aedes albopictus (also known as asian tiger mosquito) and aedes aegypti.
